Defining an Architecture for the 21st Century
Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA)
Student competition of the World Congress of Architecture 2002

North of the Lehrter Bahnhof railway station there is a site that is next to the former border and has hardly developed since 1989. The area ia characterized by low storage facilities and extensive commercial use.

The competition task asked for something nice and new in order to blur the former border. We reject this concept and develop an unusual approach: a building debris dump right in the centre of Berlin.

A beautiful and meticulously executed presentation reveals a surprising proposal. It is an astute comment on contemporary urban challenges, resulting in an acropolis for ceremonial purposes that lifts the island into a third dimension. The city is proposed to recycle itself, using the liabilities of landfill as assets. (the jury’s comment)

For the entry we have won the Hong Kong Institute of Architects Award, which equals fourth place of 544 entries.
