To add something:

If you add light structures the mass of the building still can be discerned. Perhaps new constuctions should be made of glass and steel. So you added something totally different and the past character of the fort can be seen through this additions.

To remove something

	By removing partitions or constructing a new opening you should underline the mass of the building. For example if you removed some of the partitions between the rooms of the main bastion you stressed the thickness of the construction. The wall here is nearly one and a half meters.
	If you created a new opening you could even show the mass of the ground above the fort.
