What would happen if we cut slices out of ground and walls of the main building? (floor plan) These slices are transparent and very light structures and could stand out of the fort so that they were shown to the surroundings. If standing inside the building you could realize its enourmous mass. |

In these two sections you see the fort without and with the cut. The fort at its original state turns towards the moat. Inside the corridor you cannot look outside or into any other part of the building. You almost get astray.
The gap lets you look from one level to the other and makes the corridor much brighter. The original form is not destroyed but it is replaced by a very lightweight construcion. |

Inside the building you can recognize the mass of the walls and of the overlaying ground. Standing at the slice you have the possibility to look outside the building and also inside. You can see what happens in the garden as well as you can look into rooms and the moat.
You are even able to see what happens at the level below or above you. This creates connections that did not exist befor. |

Outside the building the slices could be seen standing out of the ground. If standing in front of them you are able to look inside the building and even through it into the moat. Just like standing inside the building you are able to recognize the enourmous mass of walls and ground. A serial arrangement of those slices shows the length of the building just as its mass. |

Here we have cut through the "Bastion Centre". One part is left where it is and the other part is moved upwards and is rotated. But it is also replaced: this means that the original shape is reproduced using modern techniques and different materials. The intersection can easily be recognized. It is covered by a glass cladding so we can leave the original intersection unaltered.
This "dissection" makes you experience the original character of the building. You can feel the narrowness and massiness as it is characteristic for the fort without taking the loss of sunlight and comfort. |
| This measure reminds us of an insect nest that is cut through and covered with glass so you can observe the animals. We show the internal structure and the life inside a "building" that seems to be homogeneous and closed when you look at it from outside. |
Here you see some more photos to illustrate our ideas.
